How To Start A Side Hustle Book Review

In these tough economic times, everyone’s looking for a way to make some extra money. In his book, How To Start A Side Hustle, South African author, Nic Haralambous draws on his decades of business experience to put together a simple, easy to understand guide that puts you on a path to starting your own side hustle.

Nic breaks down the journey of starting a side hustle into easily digestible chapters, including chapters on what it takes to start a business, finding ideas, when you should start and, my personal favourite, reframing failure.

While the business principles Nic shares are global, having a South African author made this book more relatable and personal than any business book I have read. Nic did a fantastic job of balancing theory, case studies and practical advice, making it both easy to read and inspirational.

Inspired by the book and the ideas it contained, which have already made a huge impact on my business and life perspective, I gave the book to my girlfriend, Tay. Before reaching the midpoint, Tay had excitedly set up a whole new side-hustle and we now have yet another business in the house. Time will tell if my gift of the book was a smart idea.

My Favourite Quote:

“Failure is not the opposite of success – not trying is the opposite of success.” – Nic Haralmbous

Side hustles by any name are not uncommon. Every bar and braai you’ve ever been to has no doubt yielded at least one bold business plan. I cannot tell you how many times I have spoken with friends and family about starting businesses or taking risks only for them not to follow through because they are scared to fail. To be clear, I am not advocating for taking out another bond on your house for your latest get rich quick scheme and subsequently being afraid of losing your home. Money troubles are very real and bankruptcy is always a risk when starting a business but the fear I am referring to is the emotional fear. The fear that our worth is dependent on our business and that because our business failed, so have we. “You are not the work that you do. You are not the idea that fails.” – Nic Haralambous. If you are reading this and have a brilliant idea for a side hustle, why haven’t you started? Is it the fear of failure holding you back?
